Getting Through Divorce
Divorce changes everything — your living situation, your finances and your relationship with your children. An experienced attorney can help you navigate these changes and come out stronger.
At Cloutier, Conley & Duffett PA, our goal is to help you build the life that you want. Together, we will guide you through the divorce process as efficiently as possible while laying the foundation for a better future.
How Will Divorce Impact Your Finances?
Unless there are custody issues, the main issue for most people during divorce is finances. In Maine, marital assets are divided based on the principle of equitable distribution.
In general, “marital assets” are income and items acquired during the marriage with the exception of inheritances and gifts.
When deciding what is “equitable” the courts look at a variety of factors, including the length of the marriage, the financial resources of each party and the contributions — economic and noneconomic — each party made to the marriage. Our attorneys can help you get all the financial information you need to make sure you don’t leave money on the table.
At Cloutier, Conley & Duffett PA, we do everything in our power to help you leave your marriage in the most financially secure manner possible.
Protecting Your Interests During Divorce
Some lawyers are quick to litigate, fighting over every penny and every stick of furniture. The result is more animosity, a longer process — and higher attorneys’ fees. At Cloutier, Conley & Duffett PA, that is not our approach.
While our main focus is always to protect our clients’ interests, we are aware of the time, cost and stress caused by divorce. When possible, we always attempt to negotiate solutions that protect our clients’ financial, property and parental rights. However, when litigation is necessary, we have the skills necessary for success in court.
